Sweet and sour chicken is a common Chinese dish. Bite-sized chicken pieces, usually coated in batter and deep-fried, are covered in a thick sauce, and served with rice or noodles. Adding sautéed vegetables to the dish and garnishing with sesame seeds are optional steps.

The sauce is what gives sweet and sour chicken its name. Vinegar and ketchup, among other ingredients, combine to give the sauce a unique balance between sweet and sour notes. This Cantonese sauce was originally made for sweet and sour pork, but over time it has been used to flavor many meats and even tofu. So try one of the recipes shown below, and enjoy delicious sweet and sour chicken, or replace the chicken with any meat of your choice.
